Instructors tell children:

• The straightness, curvature, or orientation of a line suggests additional types of movement.
• Curved lines are the "graceful" lines. They express harmonious movement and action.
• Parallel lines are the "order" lines. When the room is put to order the lines are made parallel, and when the hair is combed it is the same process. Parallel lines when in motion express uniform action from one direction.
• Angular lines are "discord lines." They are the lines of disorder. They express violent action, as in explosion, awkward action, clumsy movements, and disorder. For example, angular lines can show untidy hair.

Instructors show the lesson image and ask children to point to:

• The graceful lines.
• The order lines.
• The disorder lines.

Children complete the following drill work:

1. Copy the orderly soldiers, as shown, until the drawing is mastered.
2. Copy the graceful dancer, as shown, until the drawing is mastered.
3. Copy the disorderly wrestlers, as shown, until the drawing is mastered.

Children complete the following memory and imagination work

1. Without looking at the lesson image, draw a still and orderly soldier saluting.
2. Without looking at the lesson image, draw two graceful figures dancing together.
3. Without looking at the lesson image, draw two discordant figures wrestling on the ground.
4. Re-examine the lesson image to verify, correct, and perfect your images for 1-3.
5. Draw a girl with long, tidy hair using parallel lines.
6. Draw a girl with long, untidy hair using angular lines.
